The Attikameks or Atikamekw Nehirowisiwok, are an autochton of Quebec, Canada. They lived in the valley of the Saint-Maurice River and named their territory Nitaskinan (meaning “Our Land”). They unilaterally declared their sovereignty over this 80,000 km2 territory in 2014, which includes the cities of La Tuque, Shawinigan and Trois-Rivières, among others.

They are divided into three bands, Manawan, Opitciwan and Wemotaci, grouped under the Council of the Atikamekw Nation based in La Tuque.

Together, they have a total registered population of 7,747 members in 2016.

The Atikamekw speak Atikamekw, a language of the Algonquian language family close to Cree, as well as French. Atikamekw is still used daily by the Atikamekw today, making it one of Quebec’s least endangered native languages.

Traditionally, they practice fishing, hunting and gathering. Sharing is also very present among them, whether it is meat, utilitarian objects, etc. They are always ready to help their own. And historically, they are allied with the Innu.
